Eligibility
To be eligible for a graduate position you must:
- Have completed a minimum of a three-year undergraduate degree, or have completed one by the end of 2012
- Have an overseas qualification recognised by National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR)
- Be an Australian citizen
- Be prepared to relocate to Canberra.
Successful candidates will be required to undertake security and medical clearances and provide evidence of their tertiary qualifications and Australian citizenship.
Application process
There are five stages in the application process:
- An online written application including a statement of claims against the selection criteria. The application will require you to complete an online 'personal particulars form'.
- Short-listing of applicants to determine suitability for interview
- An individual interview with the selection panel
- Referees checks
- Offers to successful candidates.
Online written application
Candidates will be required to write a statement of claims against the following four criteria as well as provide a copy of their resume to support their application.
Selection criteria
- Well developed communication skills.
- Well developed research and analytical skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Personal qualities including adaptability, flexibility, initiative and judgement.

Tips for preparing your written application
The department's selection team will assess the responses of all applicants to each criterion. This process creates a shortlist of applicants suitable to move to the interview stage.
Writing your application:
- Don't exceed word limits
- Directly answer the question that's being asked
- Answer every criterion
- Use the best and most relevant examples from your work, study or community roles
- Presentation does count
- Proofread your spelling and grammar before you SUBMIT - don't rely only on Spell Check.
The STAR model is the best way to form your answers.
