Objective

To make it easy for businesses to search for publicly available Australian Business Number (ABN) information.

Significance for Australia

Verifying ABN and GST status is an important compliance process businesses must undertake, and ABN Lookup is the Australian Government website that allows businesses to undertake this compliance activity. There are between 7 and 9 million searches per month for ABN information on the ABN Lookup website and through the Web services.

Departmental role and current achievements

The ABN Lookup website is hosted by business.gov.au and displays the publicly available information from the Australian Taxation Office's Australian Business Register.

ABN Lookup offers a number of services, including the ABN Lookup webservice and associated tools, which have been developed to help small businesses save time and money.

The ABN Lookup tools provide a simple and easy way to undertake multiple searches on the ABN Lookup website using either the ABNs or business names of the businesses they deal with. These details are entered into the ABN Lookup tool, and from there the latest information about a business can be retrieved simply and efficiently with the press of a button.

Registered web service users can take advantage of advanced search features to find ABNs based on postcode, entity type, tax concessions and date of registration or update.

ABN Lookup also provides a downloadable list of Deductible Gift Recipients to allow people to easily donate to charities or participate in workplace giving initiatives.

Businesses are taking further advantage of the services provided by ABN Lookup by integrating ABN information into their own applications using the ABN Lookup Web service.

Targets for 2008-09

  • Improve the usefulness and awareness of the ABN
  • Increase the uptake of ABN Lookup Web services
