To continue its commitment to small business, the Government has cut red tape, introducing improvements to the taxation regime, and other assistance measures.

To continue the promotion of Australia as an international leader in financial services, Axiss Australia will receive $7.6 million to extend operations for a further two years.

Critical Infrastructure Protection
To protect Australia's critical energy infrastructure from disruption, $4 million in funding has been allocated as part of a major critical infrastructure protection package.

Petroleum Resources Rent Tax
To encourage petroleum exploration in Australia's remote offshore areas, a taxation incentive will allow an immediate uplift to 150 per cent on petroleum resource rent tax deductions for exploration expenditure incurred in designated offshore frontier areas.

Backing Australia's Ability - Building Our Future through Science and Innovation
Backing Australia's Ability - Building Our Future through Science and Innovation initiatives were announced by the Prime Minister on 6 May 2004. It is a $5.3 billion science and innovation package to follow on from the $3 billion Backing Australia's Ability strategy announced in 2001. The Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources will be responsible for delivering a number of the specific initiatives of the new package.
