Secretary’s overview
As a Department we aim to meet the expectations of our Ministers and Parliamentary Secretary, and to work with our industry stakeholders and state governments to achieve the Australian Government’s priorities.
This Strategic Plan outlines who we are, and points the way to more detail on our main activities. You can view these on our website, and through direct links in the electronic version of this Strategic Plan. The plan also presents a medium term outlook across the portfolio’s operating environment, summarising the matters which are emerging as policy and delivery challenges for the portfolio.
The plan describes our key priorities and the strategies we will pursue over the next three years. The key priorities have been agreed with our Ministers as being the areas of primary focus for the Department. The priorities will help underpin economic growth by encouraging investment, increasing innovation and achieving greater international competitiveness in Australian industry.
Plans are constructed around the best available information. New challenges and opportunities will arise that are not now foreseen and the Department will need to have the flexibility to manage these. The Government has announced its intention to release an Industry Statement in 2007, around the theme Global Integration. This will update the outlook and strategy embodied in the existing ‘Investing for Growth’ statement and establish the industry policy framework for the next decade.
The Strategic Plan will be reviewed regularly to make sure our understanding of our environment remains current, and the activities we are working on, relevant. To ensure you have access to the most current information, I encourage you to view this plan on our website.
One of the Department’s key priorities is maintaining the confidence of our stakeholders in our capacities and performance. The Department regularly engages with its stakeholders through a range of forums and meetings and seeks their feedback through an annual Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey.
The Department and its employees are committed to modelling the APS Values and Code of Conduct. Our governance framework actively promotes ethical standards of behaviour in the workplace. The Department values its employees and the contribution they make, and provides a range of initiatives to ensure they are skilled, enabled, healthy and engaged.
I commend this plan to you.
