Overview

The Australian Government is committed to making the Australian automotive industry greener. A New Car Plan for a Greener Future is the most comprehensive plan ever devised for this vital sector of our economy. It brings every player in the industry together in a partnership to reshape the industry and deliver enduring benefits to all Australians.

Under A New Car Plan for a Greener Future, the Government is providing assistance to help the automotive industry to prepare for a low carbon future and to make the industry indispensable to global markets and supply chains.

Features of the New Car Plan*

Initiatives under the New Car Plan*

  • Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS)
    The ATS replaces the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme (ACIS). It emphasises research and development while also requiring eligible companies to demonstrate an environmental commitment. ATS commenced on 1 July 2010.
  • Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Program (AISAP)
    The $116.3 million Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Program is strengthening the automotive components sector by facilitating structural adjustment within the automotive supply chain and providing training and assistance to displaced workers.
  • Automotive Supply Chain Development Program (ASCDP)
    The Automotive Supply Chain Development Program is providing $20 million over the four years to 2012 -13 to strengthen capabilities in the components sector and improve supply chain integration.
  • Automotive Industry Innovation Council (AIIC)
    The Automotive Industry Innovation Council acts as an advisory body to the Minister and as an innovation advocate for the industry. The Council considers industry innovation challenges like climate change, sustainability and industry competitiveness as well as issues such as regulatory reform, workforce capability, skills needs, access to new technologies and other priorities for industry.
  • Automotive Market Access Program (AMAP)
    The Automotive Market Access Program is boosting component suppliers’ access to global supply chains. Two Automotive Envoys have been appointed to promote the industry using an expanded Austrade adviser network in four countries: China, India, Korea and Thailand. The Team Australia Automotive (TAA) initiative in North America has also been expanded.
  • LPG Vehicle Scheme Enhancement
    This initiative is making new LPG vehicles more affordable and encourages early adoption of new technologies, such as direct-injection LPG engines.
  • Merit Assessment Criteria for Co-Investment
    Requests for Australian Government co‑investment by motor vehicle producers are evaluated against a rigorous set of merit assessment criteria to ensure they enhance Australia’s automotive capabilities, build new business opportunities and generate economic and environmental benefits.

*From the period 1 July 2009 to its closure in January 2011, the Green Car Innovation Fund provided substantial assistance in encouraging the production of low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles, components and technologies.
