Supporting programs

Buy Australian at Home and Abroad (Buy Australian) builds on existing industry and government initiatives and programs:

  • Enterprise Connect
Enterprise Connect provides Business Advisers who will work closely with the Resources Sector Supplier Envoy and other Supplier Advocates. Buy Australian will provide additional funding to Enterprise Connect for more Business Advisers and to increase the number of its tailored advisory service grants.
  • Supplier Access to Major Projects (SAMP)
SAMP provides funds to the state-based Industry Capability Network to work with project developers to identify supply opportunities for capable and competitive Australian companies.
  • Industry Capability Networks (ICNs)
The state-based ICNs will receive an additional $1 million of SAMP funding per year though Buy Australian to ‘embed’ an Australian industry capability specialist in the procurement team of major resources projects over four years. This will ensure that the capabilities of Australian suppliers are considered in the design and procurement phases of projects.
  • Australian Industry Participation (AIP) National Framework
The AIP National Framework encourages Australian, State and Territory governments to adopt a consistent national approach to maximising Australian industry participation in investment projects, in Australia and overseas.
  • Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC)
EFIC is the Australian government's export credit agency. It works directly with eligible Australia-based companies, exporters and contractors to export projects and provide targeted financial solutions to enable them to win and finance their contracts.

Supplier Advocates

Supplier Advocates provide leadership to targeted industries to promote Australian suppliers in the government procurement market, enhance competitiveness, improve tendering practices and increase the use of government programs. There are Supplier Advocates in a number of industry sectors and it is proposed that two Resource Sector Supplier Advocates will be appointed by the end of 2011 with two more to be appointed in the first half of 2012.

Steel Supplier Advocate

The Steel Supplier Advocate, Mr Dennis O’Neill, has been consulting with steel makers in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland on ways to improve the ability of firms to secure work in the resources sector.

The Steel Supplier Advocate role has been brought under the Buy Australian umbrella to emphasise the importance of the steel industry as a key area in which the Australian Government is working to help industry win more business on major resources projects.
