On 26 May 2008, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator the Hon Kim Carr issued a media release to announce the 
terms of reference [PDF 16 KB] for the Pharmaceuticals Industry Strategy Group.
The Strategy Group will examine the drivers and barriers to attracting new internationally competitive and sustainable manufacturing, R&D and clinical trials investment in the pharmaceuticals sector. It will present a directions paper by the end of September and a final report by the end of the year.
The Strategy Group is co-chaired by Dr Brian McNamee, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of CSL and Mr Craig Pennifold, the Head of the Innovation Division, within the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
The Strategy Group comprises key industry and union leaders and has met on 7 July, 11 August and 19 September 2008. It will next meet on 24 October 2008.
On 20 October 2008, the Minister issued a media release about the Directions Paper [PDF 407 KB] that the Strategy Group completed. The Directions Paper provides an overview of the Australian and global pharmaceuticals industries, a discussion of the barriers and drivers to global and Australian industry, a strategic framework for how the industry will achieve a sustainable future and recommendations to achieve this. The Strategy Group will provide its final report to the Minister by the end of the year.
