The Pulp and Paper Industry Innovation Council (the Council) provides the Minister with strategic advice on priorities for innovation opportunities in water and energy efficiency, fibre production and product development, and it recognises the importance of the pulp and paper industry to Australia’s sustainability.
About the pulp and paper industry
The pulp and paper industry contributes to the social sustainability of rural and regional communities by providing jobs and security; to Australia’s economic sustainability by employing nearly 19,000 people and by earning more than $1 billion per annum from exports; and to environmental sustainability by growing forests.
The Biorefinery Research Institute
The Council also proposes to develop Terms of Reference for an appropriately-funded Biorefinery Research Institute. If established, the institute will focus research and development effort on biofuels and other bioproducts. It will also investigate opportunities in water-efficiency and bio energy and devise ways to maximise Australia’s capabilities in fibre production, product innovation, and renewable energy.
Membership and creation of the Council
Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, announced the establishment of the Council on 20 April 2010. The announcement was made with the release of the Final Report of the Pulp and Paper Industry Strategy Group. [
