Refreshing the National Research Priorities

Australia's National Research Priorities (NRPs) are:

  • An Environmentally Sustainable Australia
  • Promoting and Maintaining Good Health
  • Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries
  • Safeguarding Australia.

Each NRP is associated with a number of priority goals [PDF 250KB]

Stakeholder consultation

Following a recommendation in the Focusing Australia’s Publicly Funded Research Review, the department undertook a consultation process to refresh the NRPs.

A consultation paper Refreshing the National Research Priorities [PDF 118KB] [ RTF 6.1MB] was prepared by the department and public consultation took place during February and March 2012. The consultation period has now closed.  The department received over 60 submissions.

Process

The department has considered the advice provided within the submissions. The role of the NRPs was also considered during the development of the National Research Investment Plan by the Australian Research Committee (ARCom). ARCom will prepare a statement of strategic research priorities to replace the NRPs. The NRPs will remain in place until this statement is released.
