
The Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) helps Australian researchers to participate in leading edge scientific projects and workshops with Indian scientists. It supports the development of strategic alliances between Australian and Indian researchers.
It is Australia’s largest fund dedicated to bilateral research with any country, and is one of India’s largest sources of support for international research.
About the fund
Grant rounds are held annually for collaborative workshops and research projects covering a range of science and research priority areas.
The Fund has four components:
- Science and Technology Fund
- Biotechnology Fund
- Grand Challenge Fund
- Fellowship Fund

Science and Technology Fund
The latest grant round (Round Seven) closed in March 2013.
The priority areas for collaborative workshops were:
- Agricultural research
- Astronomy and astrophysics
- Environment sciences (including climate change research)
- Material science (including nanotechnology)
- Renewable energy
- Marine sciences
- Earth sciences
- Information and communication technology (including computer science)
The priority areas for collaborative research projects were:
- Information and communication technology (including computer science)
- Marine sciences
- Earth sciences
Biotechnology Fund
The latest grant round (Round Seven) closed in March 2013.
The priority areas for collaborative workshops were:
- Biomedical devices and implants
- Stem cells
- Transgenic crops and marker-assisted breeding
- Nutraceuticals and functional foods
- Bioremediation
- Bioenergy and biofuels
- Vaccines and medical diagnostics
The priority areas for collaborative research projects were:
- Vaccines, immunomodulators and immunotherapeutics
- Biotechnological interventions for improved agricultural productivity
Grand Challenge Fund
This Fund supports collaborative projects of significant scale and ambition that will deliver practical solutions to key challenges shared by both countries.
The latest grant round (Round Two) was finalised in April 2013. To find out who the successful applicants were, go to outcomes of previous rounds, program evaluation and case studies.
Round two called for applications to address challenges in the themes of health and energy.
The sub-themes of health were:
- Metabolic disorders
- Infectious diseases
- Lifestyle diseases
- Medical devices
- Healthcare delivery
The sub-themes of energy were:
- New and renewable
- Fossil fuels
- Transport
- Emerging technologies (including robotics)
Fellowship Fund
This Fund offers Early Career Fellowships and Senior Visiting Fellowships for Australian researchers to work in India – to initiate or consolidate collaboration with a leading-edge Indian host organisation.
Applications for travel in 2012-13 have closed.
This Fund is administered by the Australian Academy of Science.

Applying
The AISRF supports collaborative research projects and workshops. Eligible Australian applicants must have an eligible Indian partner to apply.
