Research Agency Charters released
The Government considers civil engagement is a core function of the Australian research community.
On 16 January 2008 the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator the Hon Kim Carr advised that the Government was committed to developing charters with public research agencies within his portfolio to support this function.
The Minister has now finalised charters with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. The charters articulate a commitment from Government concerning research independence. They also outline the freedoms and responsibilities of each research agency, and the rights and obligations of researchers within the agencies in sharing knowledge and participating in public debate.
