The purpose of these grant-in-aid programs are for activities to foster an understanding of, or promote research and scholarship in, science, social science and the humanities in Australia.

Learned Academies and the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) are ongoing programs funded on an annual calendar year basis.

The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) is funded for calendar years 2008 to 2010.

The Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS) is funded for calendar years 2007 to 2010.

In addition to funding under the Higher Education Support Act 2003, the Academies also have access to project funding from the Australian Research Council.

Eligibility and target audience

The Learned Academics include the: 

  • National Academies Forum (peak administrative body for the Learned Academies);
  • Australian Academy of Science;
  • Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering
  • Australian Academy of the Humanities; and
  • Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.

Under HESA, grants are also provided to CHASS, FASTS and ANZAAS.

The Academies, CHASS and FASTS are focal points for contact with their respective communities and are sources of advice for the Australian Government relating to their fields of expertise.
