Purpose
The Regional Protection Scheme (RPS) was an interim initiative of the Knowledge and Innovation reforms to higher education research that was extended under Backing Australia’s Ability – Building our Future through Science and Innovation. It helped to protect designated regional higher education providers from losses they incurred in their total Research Training Scheme and Institutional Grant Scheme allocations against a 2001 baseline.

The designated regional higher education providers were: Charles Sturt University; Southern Cross University; the University of New England; the University of Newcastle; University of Wollongong; Deakin University; La Trobe University; University of Ballarat; Central Queensland University; James Cook University; University of Southern Queensland; University of Tasmania; and Northern Territory University.
