Following the Federal election on 24 November 2007 and the issue of the Administrative Arrangements Order, initially on 3 December 2007 and further on 25 January 2008, the portfolio of Industry, Tourism and Resources was abolished, and a new portfolio of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research established. As part of these changes, the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research was established on 3 December 2007.

The Department strives as a key priority to encourage the sustainable growth of Australian industries by developing a national innovation system that drives knowledge creation, cutting edge science and research, international competitiveness and greater productivity. The Department is committed to developing policies and delivering programs, in partnership with stakeholders, to provide lasting economic benefits ensuring Australia's competitive future.
OUR REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
The Department reports against four outcomes:
Outcome 1 – A stronger, sustainable and internationally competitive Australian industry, comprising the manufacturing, resources and services sectors.
Outcome 2 – Enhanced economic and social benefits through a strengthened national system of innovation.
Outcome 3 – Australia maintains the strong science, research and innovation capacity required to generate and utilise knowledge.
Outcome 4 – Australia's international influence is enhanced through international recognition of Australia's education, research and training and strengthening and diversifying international linkages and collaboration.
