Announcement

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the establishment of the Built Environment Industry Innovation Council (BEIIC) and the appointment of Ms Sue Holliday as the inaugural chair of the BEIIC on 2 September at the 2008 Built Environment Meets Parliament Summit.

The Council considers industry innovation challenges like climate change, sustainability and industry competitiveness as well as issues such as regulatory reform, workforce capability, skills needs, access to new technologies and other priorities for industry.

Current Priority Prjects

The BEIIC has identified the following three priority issues for 2008-09:

  1. Procurement Practice: Impediments to innovation and opportunities for change.
  2. Retrofitting Residential Precints: Current practice, new strategies and industry training responses.
  3. Innovative Practices in the Australian Built Environment Sector: An information resource for stakeholders.

The Department has commissioned research projects for each of these issues. The final reports will be considered in the Council’s advice to Senator Carr and published on this website.

Other Initiatives:

A sub-group of the BEIIC is working with the Research Infrastructure Branch of DIISR on research infrastructure needs for the built environment and engaging with the Australian Research Council on built environment research funding.

DIISR is supporting the methodological element of the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) project Constructing Cities of the Future. This project will form advice to the Built Environment Industry Innovation Council.

BEIIC Stakeholder Forum 24 April 2009 Canberra

The BEIIC agreed at its first meeting in October 2008 that a stakeholder forum be organised in 2009 to provide a mechanism for the Council to engage with peak industry bodies and other stakeholders. A wide range of stakeholders attended a forum in Canberra on 24 April 2009 to assist the BEIIC to identify industry innovation priorities.  These will be considered in BEIIC's strategic priority setting and future project development.
