Objective
To create an effective, efficient, consistent and accessible intellectual property (IP) system that promotes innovation, investment and international competitiveness for the benefit of all Australians.
Significance for Australia
IP Australia is making it possible for Australian businesses to establish and maintain globally competitive positions by encouraging increased innovation, investment and trade through the effective use of IP.
Departmental role and current achievements
IP Australia administers patent, trade mark, design and plant breeder’s rights.
IP Australia is committed to providing a strong legal framework that provides enforceable rights that meet current and future business needs. It plays a key role in shaping the development of the increasingly important international IP framework, and works to increase awareness and understanding of IP amongst Australian business and the broader Australian community.
IP Australia supports economies in our region to develop their capacity in the IP rights arena, and ensures that standards within the patent and trade marks attorney professions remain high by supporting the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys and Disciplinary Tribunal. Public education and awareness programs target a variety of sectors from fashion designers to small business and help Australians recognise the importance of intellectual property.
IP Australia is working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney General’s Department and Australian Customs, to develop and negotiate IP provisions for a number of Free Trade Agreements.
IP Australia has initiated a program to provide better access to patent data for inventors, researchers and IP professionals in Australia and around the world. The first outcome of the program, called AusPat, has been delivered. AusPat provides an improved search facility that will ultimately provide electronic access to all Australian patent data.
