The Pulp and Paper Industry Strategy Group held its fifth meeting in Melbourne on 7 December 2009. At the request of members, Senator Carr agreed to extend the review period by three months. The Group will now report to the Minister by 31 March 2010.

Background

On 19 June 2009, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, announced the formation of a new Pulp and Paper Industry Strategy Group to undertake a review of the pulp and paper industry in Australia.

The Strategy Group is tasked with developing a plan to encourage innovation and attract investment in pulp and paper manufacturing in Australia. Members of the Strategy Group will include senior representatives from the leading pulp and paper companies, unions, industry experts and all levels of government.

The Strategy Group is chaired by Mr Stephen Payne, Head of the Manufacturing Division in the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, with Mr Jim Henneberry, CEO of Australian Paper, and Mr Michael O’Connor, National Secretary of the CFMEU’s Forestry and Furnishing Products Division, as deputy co-chairs.

On 21 August 2009, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the release of the Pulp and Paper Industry Strategy Group Issues Paper (.pdf, 2.1MB, .rtf, 3.3MB). The paper identifies the factors that will assist the industry build its innovative capacity and attract new investment in Australia.
