‘TOTAL PRECISION’

Pat Boland, Chief Executive Officer, ANCA Pty Ltd

THE BUZZ

ANCA Pty Ltd makes precision machine tools, and sells them to the world. According to Chief Executive Officer Pat Boland, ‘anywhere where timber is being cut, metal is being cut, or even bone in surgical cases is being cut, our machines made the tools which are being used.’

Pat, an electrical engineer, co-founded the company more than thirty years ago with Pat McCluskey. Pat Boland now enjoys ‘the buzz whenever I get on a 747 or the Airbus 380 and see all the components which were manufactured by cutting tools which were made on our machines. It gives me the feeling that we’ve actually achieved something.’

WORLD CLASS CUSTOMERS

ANCA Pty Ltd has achieved success in the international marketplace. Pat says that ‘some years 100% of our sales are overseas, this year it’s probably about 98%.’ The company, which has 350 employees, makes about 300 highly sophisticated, precision machines a year, with an average price of about $400,000 each.

‘Once you start getting into the world, you start meeting world class customers. And world class customers are partly what drag you along with innovation.’

Pat Boland, Chief Executive Officer, ANCA Pty Ltd

THE BIGGEST RISK

From the beginning, Pat says that the company was ‘always keen to climb on other people’s shoulders to get to a level where we can actually start innovating’ and innovation has always been a driver to, and a requirement of, success.

Success brings with it its own challenges. The biggest risk according to Pat, ‘is getting complacent, thinking you’ve reached a destination.’ ANCA Pty Ltd knows from experience that a company cannot afford to live on past achievements because competitors will catch up. ‘Some of our innovations’ Pat says, ‘completely revolutionised the industry, like the 3D simulation, as time goes by our competitors offer a similar system.’
