‘THAT’S A FANTASTIC IDEA’
Diane Tompson, Managing Director, The Powercom Group
AN EDUCATIONAL CULTURE
The Powercom Group is a group of four companies: electronics manufacturing, service, research and design consulting, and telemetry product and services. The Powercom Group offers engineered communications, lightning and surge protection solutions and is, according to Managing Director Diane Tompson, ‘changing the way people are monitoring the environment.’
Diane believes that innovation is different in every facet of a business. Engineering which is, Diane says, ‘what I think everybody imagines that innovation is’, but it should equally occur in administration, in sales and in marketing. To encourage innovation, The Powercom Group has developed what Diane calls ‘an educational culture’ in which people are not frightened of voicing their opinions and of constantly learning.
This approach to innovation has led, amongst many firsts, to the solar units that The Powercom Group is installing in schools which, Diane explains, ‘will enable a child in kindergarten to know how many iTunes he or she can download by turning off one or two lights in their school. We want our children to know the impact that they have on their environment so that they will grow up differently from us.’

‘Don’t expect other people to be quite as passionate. You’ve got to take them on the journey with you.’
Diane Tompson, Managing Director, The Powercom Group
NEW WAYS
The Powercom Group works in a field of constant change. Innovation can arise internally, from the Group’s engineers, or with the sales and marketing staff who go out and bring back ideas from their customers suggesting to the engineers ‘new ways of using a particular product.’ It is a dynamic industry which means, Diane Tompson says, that ‘I don’t know what we’ll be doing in ten years time, I don’t even know sometimes what we’ll be doing in ten weeks time. The world of electronics is constantly changing.’
I WANT IT
According to Diane, the most important thing in business is to constantly review your performance and come up with good concepts so that the market goes ‘that’s a fantastic idea, that’s a great product, I want it.’
