‘THE THING THAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED’
Siobhan Toohill, General Manager, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Stockland
CREATING CHANGE
For Siobhan Toohill, the greatest challenge facing Stockland, Australia’s largest diversified property business, is to ‘create not only value for ourselves and our business and our shareholders but also lasting value for the people that tenant our buildings, shop in our shopping centres or live in our residential communities’. Siobhan says that ‘the thing that gets you out of bed every day is the possibility of creating change.’
START SMALL
Start small and pilot new ideas is one strategy Siobhan recommends. ‘Once people can see what it is that you’re talking about, can touch it and feel it and smell it’ she says, ‘they’ll get excited about it and from there it will grow and you’ll bring more people into it and more people will feel part of that innovation.’
In the built environment Siobhan observes that people are most often talking about the things that we add onto buildings or the gadgetry that we build into buildings, but to her ‘where you really need to start is with the people.’ Siobhan believes that innovation arises from ‘people constantly evolving what they do and how they do what they do.’

‘The benefit for us is, if we get things right our projects move more smoothly through approval processes, or people want to live in our residential communities, or shop in our shopping centres.’

THE JOURNEY
Her own job at Stockland has evolved as the value of creating and pursuing a sustainability agenda has become evident. It is recognition that, as she puts it, ‘these initiatives and these risks are built into the daily processes of what we do. It’s not just a bolt on, it’s not just an add on to what we think about. Innovation for me is not just about technical solutions, it’s how we take people on the journey to create change.’
