‘THE KEY ISSUE IS PASSION’
Gary Zamel, Managing Director, Mine Site Technologies Pty Ltd
THE COALFACE
Gary Zamel, as Chairman of Latitude Investments Pty Ltd, has taken a portfolio of technology companies ‘from a start-up phase to commercial organisations that are now global.’ Gary began his career by going underground at eighteen, literally, as he says, ‘at the coalface.’
About twenty-five years ago, Gary decided to start up a company to address a key issue in the industry in which he had grown up: providing communications in mines to make them safer. That start-up now exports into the United States, Canada, China, Africa and South America.
UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS
The mining industry, Gary Zamel says, teaches the importance of risk assessment. ‘One of the things that we pride ourselves on’ he says, ‘is that we don’t take steps without understanding the risks.’
In Gary’s view, another key issue is passion. ‘If you can see that someone comes forward with an idea and they are passionate about it’ he says, ‘then you’re much more likely to back that idea.’

‘It’s really a case of giving everybody an opportunity to be creative, to be innovative in the way in which they perform their tasks and to not hold anybody back.’

A SMART NATION
Gary Zamel believes that there are opportunities to build further businesses like Mine Site Technologies through high value-added technology developments which would allow Australia to ‘deliver as a smart nation’ into international markets. The key, he believes, is people who come up with ideas and create innovation, ‘it is people that you ask to implement where your business is going.’
Gary has developed Nubian Water Systems, a grey water treatment company and invested in Park Assist, an innovative parking solutions business. These, he says, are the sorts of innovations in which Australia is at the forefront of what is happening globally.
