The purpose of JRE is to maintain and strengthen Australia's knowledge base and research capabilities by developing an effective research and research training system in the higher education sector. The JRE replaced the Institutional Grants Scheme (IGS) from 2010.
The JRE provides block grants, on a calendar year basis, to eligible Australian Higher Education Providers (HEPs) to support research and research training activities. HEPs have discretion in the way they spend their JRE grant. The JRE may be used to fund any activity related to research.
Specifically, the JRE aims to:
- support the general fabric of the research and research training activities of HEPs
- allow HEPs to manage their own research activities and set their own priorities
- assist HEPs to respond flexibly to their research environment in accordance with their own strategies
- enhance support for areas of research strength
Important Note: Payments are made to HEPs who administer the schemes on behalf of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. Individual students or researchers need to approach their HEP to obtain funding support.
Guidelines
The guidelines applying to JRE for 2010 are contained within the Other Grants Guidelines (Research) 2009 which can be downloaded from the Australian Government's Federal Register of Legislative Instruments at:
