The twentieth meeting of the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC), was held on 5 June 2009 at Parliament House.

PMSEIC is Australia's highest level body advising on important issues of science, engineering and innovation that impact on economics, public good, education, employment, security and sustainable development.

The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister and discussed the new model for PMSEIC proposed by the Chief Scientist and incorporating the stronger focus on strategic foresighting  outlined in the Government's innovation plan Powering Ideas - An Innovation Agenda for the 21st Century.

A PMSEIC Expert Working Group report, Epidemics in a Changing World, was also tabled. The Working Group, comprised of key health researchers from some of Australia's leading universities and research centres, presented a timely report to the Council on the scientific challenges faced by Australia in the event of a global epidemic affecting humans or animals. The report recommendations were discussed and the Prime Minister thanked the members for their contributions.
