Skills training and workforce development

Workforce development is the comprehensive management of human resources to better meet the demands of a global economy at both the national and local levels. This is done through improving economic competitiveness and social cohesion.

To help improve workforce development practices, the government conducts projects and research, and funds a range of programs and initiatives.

Programs and initiatives

Australian Apprenticeships – available to anyone of working age regardless of education level
Apprentice to Business Owner Program (AtoB Program) – commencing in 2013., the program will provide training in a nationally recognised qualification in small business management, and includes business mentoring support for up to 12 months.
Climate change and skills for sustainability – Green Skills Agreement, Skills for the Carbon Challenge, and the Clean Energy and Other Skills Package
Critical Skills Investment Fund – co-funding for industry partnerships to provide training and employment in critical industry sectors
Investing in Experience (Skills Recognition and Training) – support for mature age workers to gain nationally recognised qualifications
National Disability Coordination Officer Program – improves support services for people with disabilities moving into post-school education, training and employment
National Resources Sector Workforce Strategy – a plan to address skills and labour needs in the resources sector
National Workforce Development Fund – funding to support training and workforce development in areas of current and future skills need
Productivity Places – information about the closure of this program
Queensland Jobs and Skills Package – support for industry, business and communities affected by floods and Cyclone Yasi
Training Places for Single and Teenage Parents – training to improve skill sets and job prospects for single and teenage parents on Parenting Payment
